Uplifting and enabling girls to succeed

Empowering and supporting girls

What's the Issue?

The Girls Mentorship Program addresses an important concern in Mombasa: many girls do not make the shift from primary school to 9th grade; and many more girls drop out of high school before graduating. High school is not free in Kenya, and many families are reluctant to pay for the education of their daughters. Girls are resigned to being married off in their mid-teens, if not before, and a future of child-bearing and subservience is set at age 14.

Envisioning Success

Helping Each Girl Take Charge of her Future

The Mentorship Programs are organized by the Mombasa Archdiocese staff, and cover such topics as health and hygiene, hiv and pregnancy prevention, managing relationships, spirituality, preparing for secondary school and university, and career planning.  Most importantly, the program builds girls' confidence and gives them a wealth of supportive resources to draw upon. They return to their villages feeling loved, uplifted, and empowered, with a concrete plan for their future.

The Mentorship Program challenges and encourages each girl to envision how she can turn her dreams into reality.
